About RJOB

RJOB’s Mandate
Restorative Justice Oak Bay’s (RJOB) mandate is to bring together people - victims, offenders, and their supporters-to heal the harm caused by offending behaviour.
RJOB’s Mission Statement
The Oak Bay Restorative Justice Society’s mission is to promote the principles of restorative justice, which focus on the harms of wrongdoing more than on the rules that have been broken, by making the satisfaction of the victim, the reclamation of the offender, and the involvement of the community as important as the letter of the law.
RJOB’s Vision Statement
Justice that begins in the community.
RJ Values
Eight major values underpin RJOB and are reflected in all aspects of its performance. According to the RJOB constitution, restorative justice:
(a)Recognizes the inherent worth and dignity of every person,
(b)Is a collaborative response to crime which seeks to address and balance the rights and responsibilities of victims, offenders, communities and the government,
(c)Involves both the victim and offender as full participants,
(d)Focuses on healing the harm caused by crime and reducing the likelihood of future harm, by: i. enabling and encouraging offenders to take responsibility for their actions and for the harm they have caused, ii. restoring the victim(s) through reparation and vindication, and iii. promoting reintegration of both within the community
(e)Provides an opportunity for an offender to face the personal dimension of the harm caused by their crime and, where appropriate, to be reconciled with those they have harmed,
(f)Acknowledges and addresses the offender's injuries, both those which contributed to the offence, and those which resulted from it,
(g)Invites accountability for an offence which focuses on the repair of the injury caused by the crime rather than the creation of new injuries,
(h)Recognizes the government's role to maintain a framework of order through fair and effective use of force, and the community's right to develop peaceful communities by building strong and inclusive relationships,
(i)Supports educational peace-building programming that is consistent with the values and principles of restorative justice.
